Guelph, Live Music, Eddie Orso,Music
I'd heard of Eddie Orso previously.  We're what the kids call, Twitter Pals.  However, I hadn't really *heard* Eddie before.  All that changed today.  (Thanks CBC Radio 3!)
Eddie's first single off his new EP is available for free download at http://eddieorso.com/.  If that's not enough for you, he's streaming the entire EP (He Said / She Said) over at CBC Radio 3.
If you find yourself in Waterloo this Thursday January 28, check him out at The Starlight.  $10 at the door.
Hopefully we'll see him in Guelph sometime in the near future!

The Sadies at the Dublin Street United Church - Video 01/25/2010

I caught The Sadies (and Ladies of the Canyon) show down at the old Dublin St. United Church on Friday.  Incredible.  These guys have clearly taken a guitar lesson or two in their day..  Awesome musicians and entertainers.  If you ever get the chance to see them in your town, do it.  You will thank yourself for going!
I took a bit of video that I've linked to for your viewing pleasure.  Unfortunately(?) the loudness of the show is not accurately reflected in the videos.  They had that church rawkin'!

Sadies, Guelph, Music
Psychedelic country rock, surf and bluegrass band The Sadies roll into Guelph for a special concert at Dublin Street United Church on Friday January 22.  The band was recently in the studio with Gary Louris (Jayhawks) to work on their next album.  The Sadies make believers out of everyone lucky enough to experience one of their mind-blowing live shows.
Opening the show are Montreal's Ladies of The Canyon whose music is candy sweet folk pop one minute and heart-wrenching soulful complaint the next.
7:30 door, 8:00 show - $20 ($18 U of G students)
Tickets on sale at Ground Floor Music in Guelph.

Evening Hymns, Guelph, Music, eBar
After missing his last show in Guelph back in November (due to an illness), Jonas Bonnetta's project Evening Hynms is coming back to town.  Playing the eBar on Wednesday January 20 with Toronto group Forest City Lovers.
Evening Hymns just seems to be piling up the top 10 award nods of late.
Both bands are on the venerable Toronto independent record label Out Of This Spark.
Come early.  This show should be excellent!

Islands: No You Don't video 01/07/2010

I came across this video for the Islands the other day.  There's three things I love about this video: 1. Islands, 2. Michael Cera & 3. a Winnipeg Shriners jacket.
There is a Guelph connection here.  The Gordon brothers Evan and Geordie are current members of Islands and toured Vapours this past Fall.  Past members also include Guelphite Jim Guthrie.
Enjoy!

The Great Shows of 2009 Recap 01/01/2010

2009 Guelph Music
Well it's finally here.  2010.  I'll spare you the drivel on how good/bad 2009 was and get straight in to some of the great shows I caught in Guelph in '09.
Back in February I caught the Arkells and Waking Eyes show at the eBar.  This was my first time seeing both of these bands.  The place was only 1/2 full of folks seemingly there only to see the Arkells who had just begun getting some serious radio airplay.   When the Arkells finished their set, the crowd disappeared too.  I'll just say that the 15 or so of us left to catch the Waking Eyes were treated to a awesome show.  Way better than the Arkells (in my opinion!)  Much more tight and together.
April was the Constantines and The Weakerthans (sporting members of the Waking Eyes) at the River Run Center.  Normally I'm not a fan of this sit down venue, but I think the front row seats we had really made a difference!  The Weakerthans are tremendous to see live.  The Cons are no slouches either!  If you ever get a chance to see The Weakerthans live, do it!
Music in Guelph in July means only one thing: Hillside Festival!  There were so many bands and great memorable moments.  I don't even know where to start.  Ok, well Woodhands on the Island stage Saturday night were downright incredibly awesome.  Come to think of it, the entire Saturday night Island stage line-up from 6PM onwards was just... wowzers.
I saw Silver Starling in September at the Albion Hotel.  Prior to this evening I had not heard of them.  (Apparently they were at Hillside this past Summer -- where was I!?)  I loved these guys.  I really hope we can see them again in Guelph on 2010.
I saw the Arkells again this Fall.  What a difference 9 months makes!  Not only are they now headlining their shows, the venue was packed.  Incredible what a string of hit singles with massive radio play will get you!  They put on a fantastic show.  So fun and full of energy.
OOps.  I seemed to have gone a little long winded here.  There were plenty of shows this past year.  Many more that deserve a mention... wait almost forgot.  The most unique show had to be Danny Michel doing a solo show on Earth Day at the Dublin Street United Church.  Great on so many levels.  Arguably the best show in 09.  (who am I arguing with??)
If 2010 is half as good as 2009, it's going to be another great year for live music in Guelph!
